Africa Action is the oldest advocacy organization on African affairs in the United States, dating back to 1953. We provide accessible information and analysis on Africa, and we work with grassroots networks across the U.S. to shape the future of U.S. policies towards Africa to ensure that they support African efforts to address the continent's challenges. We help people in communities across the U.S. to become more active participants in our democracy by becoming more involved in shaping U.S. foreign policy, especially relations with African nations.

Africa Action's current work focuses on three urgent African priorities - stopping the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, ending Africa's HIV/AIDS crisis, and achieving the cancellation of Africa's illegitimate debts.  Africa Action works with networks of students, religious leaders and others across the U.S. to raise awareness about these challenges and to advocate for specific changes in U.S. policies to address these issues.

Africa Action works in partnership with activists and civil society organizations throughout the U.S. and in Africa in the pursuit of its mission and to promote the full spectrum of human rights.  Africa Action's work is grounded in the history and purpose of its predecessor organizations - the American Committee on Africa (ACOA), The Africa Fund, and the Africa Policy Information Center (APIC), which were founded by black and white civil rights leaders who began to work for freedom and justice in Africa in 1953.

Africa Action depends on thousands of individuals who donate anything from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars each year to enable us to continue our work. We do not accept U.S. or foreign government funds, and we do not have big corporate underwriters to support our work. Many individuals give through the Combined Federal Campaign and state and local campaigns for which we qualify. Our work requires the support and trust of the public and this shapes how we manage every aspect of our work. Africa Action is audited each year by an independent accounting firm. Expenses for administration and fundraising in 2005 were less than 25%.
