Student Network
Working to EDUCATE, MOBILIZE and NETWORK Students in the Fight
for Justice in U.S. Policies toward Africa.
The Africa Action Student Network is a community of student activists
across the country committed to mobilizing and advocating for U.S.
policies that promote political, economic and social justice in
Africa. Students have historically played a pivotal role in advocating
for change was most evident in the South Africa anti-apartheid movement,
when students mobilized to divest university funds from the apartheid
regime and press for U.S. sanctions against that white minority
government. Africa Action was actively involved with students in
fighting apartheid in South Africa, and is now engaged in countering
Global Apartheid, an international system of minority rule by a
handful of rich countries, in which wealth and power, and access
to basic human rights, are determined by race and place. Students
still play a pivotal role in this movement.
Student Network Goals:
- To help educate students and the public about
U.S. Africa policy.
- To empower students as activists, providing
skills training, resources and ideas

Africa Action chapters, but rather, it encourages either campus
organizations to get involved in mobilizing their constituencies
or individual students to reach out and engage existing organizations
with interest in justice for Africa.
Current Campaigns
Stop Genocide in Darfur: Despite mounting public
attention to the genocide in Darfur and its ever-growing death toll,
little has been done by the U.S. to put an immediate stop to the
violence in that region of western Sudan. Africa Action calls on
the U.S. to take every step necessary through the United Nations
to establish a mandate for an international force to protect civilians
in support of existing efforts by the African Union.
End HIV/AIDS in Africa: Africa is home to more
than 26 million of the 40 million people worldwide now living with
HIV/AIDS. The pandemic is having a devastating social, economic
and political impact on the continent. Urgent action is needed in
the fight against HIV/AIDS. Africa Action has been actively engaged
in this work with an emphasis on funding the fight against HIV/AIDS,
promoting access to essential medicines and challenging structural
issues that fuel the pandemic, including Africa’s debt crisis
and unfair trade rules.
Cancel Africa’s Debt: Africa's massive external
debt burden is the single biggest obstacle to the continent's development
and drains resources that could be re-invested in the urgent fight
against HIV/AIDS. Africa Action maintains that these debts are illegitimate
(and facilitate the existence of a system of Global Apartheid).
Africa Action works toward 100% debt cancellation for all African
countries without harmful conditions.
